Backpacking has been around for decades, but it’s gained huge popularity as travel has become more accessible and affordable. Backpacking can refer to a range of travel styles, but typically describes budget-conscious holidays. Often, a backpacking holiday will involve shared accommodation like hostels and affordable transportation like buses.

You don’t need much to embark on a backpacking adventure in Australia, but there are a few essentials. One requirement is a valid visa. Before booking your flight, apply for the appropriate visa and wait for it to be granted. This will ensure that you have a smooth arrival into Australia.
You’ll also want to be sure you have sufficient funds that will last you the duration of your holiday. Because tourist and visitor visas do not allow you to work or earn money in Australia, it’s important that you save up beforehand. If you’d rather work as you travel, consider a Working Holiday Visa, which will let you work and wander in Australia for up to 12 months.
